High user density, big bandwidth, heritage sandstone, rapid deployment.
Q. How much of a challenge do think sandstone walls create and how did you address this ?
A. In a heritage building, sand stone tends to absorb moisture and ground salts which, if you look at the physics, are the natural enemies of 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi. 5Ghz Wi-Fi is also challenged by thick walls as it does not propagate as far as 2.4Ghz. This makes it difficult to get good Wi-Fi coverage and throughput in an old building such as the Sydney Town Hall. To address this, we used Ruckus Wi-Fi hardware with dynamic antenna capability to deliver signals where they are required.
The second technique that we used was Ruckus meshing which allows us to provide connectivity to Wireless Access Points (AP’s) without the use of Ethernet cables. Any cabling is difficult in a heritage building where there are significant restrictions relating to the installation of new cabling plant.
Q. How did you cope with the short time scale for actual installation?
A. We assembled the whole network and tested it in our offices prior to installation – this cut the actual installation time down by half but left little room for hiccups – thankful there were none!
Q. What software tools do you use to make scheduling of conferences easier?
A. GX2 developed a tool called the Conference Module that builds a customisable .pdf to advise attendees of the WLAN and login details, as well as automatically deploying the conference Wi-Fi across the appropriate zones at the venue. At the end of the event, the Wi-Fi is automatically disabled. This makes it very easy for venues to manage lots of events.
Q. How do you cope with high user density?
A. The Ruckus gear has been upgraded over the years to handle increasing demand for more Wi-Fi bandwidth. We’ve gone from single-band APs to the latest dual-band Ruckus 802.11ac APs which can accommodate the most demanding audiences.
During our time working with GX2 Technology, we have found the team to be responsive, professional and always able to adapt to our customers Internet needs... I can highly recommend GX2 Technology for any event or conference venue.
