Okemo Mountain Resort, Ludlow, Vermont, USA
Okemo Mountain Resort regularly received complaints of slow internet service from guests at the ski resort.
Okemo is a four-season, family-friendly resort offering skiing, snowboarding, and other outdoor activities in the wintertime…plus golf, hiking, biking, swimming and more in the summertime!
The Wi-Fi network installed 13 years ago provided adequate coverage back then, but now it couldn’t keep up with guests bringing multiple devices and expecting to stream movies after a fun day of skiing.
They knew the network was in need of a major overhaul.
The original network had only 18 access points for three multi-story buildings. The APs were installed on every other floor with the idea that coverage would bleed over to additional floors.
It simply wasn’t adequate to support the number of connections. Guests continually got dropped or didn’t have enough bandwidth to browse or stream once connected.
The complaints were out of control.
After an initial phone discussion, Okemo knew GX2 immediately understood the issues and could help.
GX2 conducted a multi-day site survey of the entire facility and developed a heat map and full HSIA network design.
The solution included new Ruckus R510 Access Points, Brocade Switches, FortiGate Firewall, Ruckus Cloud Controller and all new cabling for Adams House and Jackson Gore Inn.
GX2 will also provide 24x7 network monitoring and full guest support.
“The GX2 installation team was impressive. I am amazed at how much work got done in just two weeks,” said Ray O’Connell, Okemo CIO.
The GX2 team works hard to be an extension of the hotel’s IT team. “I had several questions for the GX2 engineer and interrupted him several times. Each time, he would stop what he was doing and devoted his full attention to me,” remarked O’Connell.
“The infrastructure work was daunting but they did it all. The hotel GM commented that they were barely even noticed. There was zero disruption to guests,” continued O’Connell.
GX2 focuses attention on the upfront design and installation to minimize ongoing support issues. This attention to detail shows. O’Connell commented, “I’m a stickler for neat and organized wiring and the work they did more than exceeded my expectations.”
There was an issue soon after installation. GX2 called to notify Okemo of the problem and the steps they were taking to resolve it. “We wish we had other vendors that were that responsive and proactive,” said O’Connell.
“Things have just worked. We have zero hesitation bringing them in on future other projects.” Okemo is working with GX2 to help with additional on-mountain coverage at Okemo and provide support for other resort properties.
